Alberta's american elms

An approximately 25 year old American Elm suffered storm damage and an over crouded canopy

After pruning: the damaged and dead wood has been removed and the limbs in the canopy are clear to grow for another decade

A Mature American Elm 25 years after being topped. The canopy is full of dead limbs, crossing limbs, and has become self damaging

After pruning: The dead wood is removed All of the crossing limbs have been cleared and a more uniform canopy shape has been created with only about 20% of the living tree being removed.

A young Elm growing in a park like setting. A crack has already formed in the union of the 2 co-dominant stems. A limb tear out here would be catastrophic for this tree loosing almost 50% of its live tissue and looking extremely lopsided.

After pruning: The larger stem with the more vertical growth habit has been chosen to be the main trunk. The Lesser stem growing on more of an angle has been subordinated by 30-40% in an attempt to keep it smaller.
