Choosing the right tree for the right location is where it begins: Careful planning and knowledge of a trees characteristics can prevent a lot of headaches down the road:A tree that has beautiful flowers in the spring (mountain ash, or flowering crab apples) has fruit in the fall and will leave an awe full mess on sidewalks; a small yard or close to a home is no place for a Colorado blue spruce which will spread 20 m. etc
Quality stock. What happens to a seedling in the nursery can affect the health and longevity of the tree.
Proper planting: preparation of the tree and the growing environment to give the tree the best possible chance of survival.
Care after planting: Watering, and proper fertilizer rates for the soil type and tree can boost the growth of trees without placing them at risk for winter dye-back, or weak wood leading to limb failure
